What is Hypnosis?

The term Hypnosis is born from the Ancient Greek word ‘hynos’ translated as sleep, however hypnosis is not at all sleep, or indeed a trance state as is regularly misconstrued. Hypnosis can be described as an altered state of awareness where the critical and analytical conscious mind can be sufficiently bypassed in the short term to allow access to the unconscious mind and it’s wealth of memories, experiences and intelligence. The conscious mind being that which we actively think with all day long, and the unconscious mind that which stores our history and deals with the daily body maintenance and autonomic processes. Hypnosis is a state of mind we can all find ourselves drifting into at irregular points of the day, often referred to as ‘daydreaming’. This might be whilst driving, especially during an extremely familiar route, or being engrossed in a TV programme or film, actively being part of the plot but still aware of our surroundings. Generally examples can often be made from completing mundane tasks whilst perhaps picturing ourselves on a recent holiday, often in conjunction with a level of eye fixation. Hypnosis is a natural state that we allow ourselves to drift into subconsciously or is deliberately ‘induced’ by the ‘hypnotist’.

A hypnotist might turn you into a chicken or pull some other silly embarrassing tricks on you
A clinical hypnotherapist would never do this. This is confusing a stage hypnotist with a clinical hypnotherapist.
You must be weak minded if you can be hypnotised
Anyone who can understand simple instructions and concentrate adequately can be hypnotised.
You can get 'stuck' in hypnosis
This is simply not true. On rare occasions a subject may not come out of the trance straight away. This is usually because they are enjoying the relaxing state so much that they don’t want to come out.
You are not hypnotised if you can hear the hypnotist
This is also not true. Each person has a unique experience of hypnosis. Some people consciously hear the hypnotist, whereas others do not. This has no bearing on the success of the session whatsoever.
You can be made to reveal your deepest secrets when in a hypnotic trance
Since your mind is fully aware and awake during a hypnotic session this is not possible. If you really do not want to talk about something then you are under no compulsion to do so.
